FUN POPS - 3D PRODUCT IMAGERY

The fine folks over at Paradox reached out about creating a new catalog of beauty shots for their client Fun Pops. I accepted the challenge! It turns out that frozen pops can be a bit tricky...

CGI PRODUCT BEAUTY SHOTS

It's tricky no nail down the essential 'look' of a frozen pop, because they exist in a constant state of change. The pop looks different when you first pull it out of the freezer vs when its been in your hand for a few minutes. Both are attractive in their own right. Figuring out the how to get the best of both worlds... that's a job for CGI!

EARLY TESTING

Real pops exist in liquid form before they are frozen, and that liquid is constrained by the plastic pouch that it's held in. I wanted the pops to be as realistic as possible, so I started with a simulation to get the liquid state of the unfrozen packaging.

WORK-IN-PROGRESS UNFROZEN POP

Once I had the volume simulated, I added the plastic edges and air pockets. Toss in a little color and you have a pretty decent representation of an unfrozen Fun Pop!

FROZEN POPS - UNOPENED

After that, I spent some time observing how the pops change when they are frozen. I landed on the '5 minutes out of the freezer' look. Not so frosty that you can't see the beautifully colored product, but enough get some good appetite appeal!

FROZEN POPS - OPENED

The folks over at Fun Pops wanted each individual pop to have it's own look. They didn't want the catalogue of images to be the same pop recolored over and over. I agreed with their perspective on the matter, so I spent some time sculpting individual ends to the pops.

FUN ANGLES AND GROUPS

Once we had the look nailed, we did some fun angles and group shots.

THE BAG

Finally, there's the bag! We couldn't let those unfrozen pops go to waste... The mesh bag was interesting to do. I ended up using Geometry Nodes in Blender. It's built on generated curves, so it's very lightweight to style. I did it with traditional geometry and modifiers at first, and it was a bit too heavy to be responsive during styling. Geometry Nodes for the win, again!
