In this section, I go a little deeper into my specific contributions as a production artist on this project. If you would like to see an overview of the project, take a look at my creative direction page for this project.
Here's the full teaser video for context. I did all of the editing for this project. In addition to editing, I also constructed a few of these shots and did a ton of motion tracking.
The frame on top is from the final composite. The bottom is a screen capture of my motion tracking in Blender. You can see the original shot as the source of the motion track. Once tracked, I painted out the original aircraft and added the new H-125.
The transit shot was completely manufactured. This wasn't a replacement like many of the others. I constructed and animated this shot completely in Blender. The only thing that technically isn't CGI is the background plate.
I'm not gonna lie friends, this was hard. First I tracked the background. There was a ton motion blur, which made it difficult to keep good common markers in the frame. Once I had a good track on the camera's motion, I then tracked the helicopter's motion relative the tracked camera. Armed with a good track, I then went into After Effects and painted out the original helicopter. Compositing in the new CGI helicopter was the easy part.😊
This little quick-turn shot was going to be a track and replace, but I ended up just mimicking the motion and building the 3D shot from scratch.
This was another instance where there wasn't a good option to track and replace, so I just threw together a quick city that matches the other shots closely enough and went with it!
The really tricky part about this one was actually the roto on the dudes!
Similar to the drop off shot, this was actually a really simple scene to light and animate. The really hard part was rotoscoping the dudes. We were working with client-provided footage that was shot several years ago. Since the source wasn't the highest quality we had to do some AI upres and compression removal. That can make roto tricky because AI sometimes fills in the blanks in "interesting" ways.
