RING POP - 3D PRODUCT IMAGERY

Ring Pop decided it was time to create realistic hero shots of all of their Ring Pop products and packages. My friends at Flint & Steel reached out about the possibility of doing them 100% CGI. Of course I said yes!

BEAUTY SHOTS

I believe that it's the imperfections that add realism. In this case, we added just enough bubbles and surface warbles to be realistic. But it was a careful balance, because we didn't want to distort that iconic look of the Ring Pops themselves. The actual Ring Pops vary a bit in manufacturing, so it would be difficult find one that's absolutely photo-perfect.

THE FLAVORS

Here are the core flavors that I created. Each pop has just the right amount of micro bubbles, and the iconic large bubble at the top of the pop. You will notice that there is a big center bubble on each of the transparent pops. Most Ring Pops have this because of the way that the candy is manufactured. I also carefully matched the index of refraction so that the internal peg on the plastic ring looks as it does in the real world.

PLASTIC RING BASE

To make these pops as realistic as possible, I did detailed measurements and examined the structures. For the plastic base, I even went as far as to include the seams from where the molded halves were attached. That funky shaped peg at the top is the thing that you can see on the inside of the transparent pops.

PACKAGING

To create these packages, I actually deconstructed the real thing and then recreated it with a cloth simulation. I used stitching in areas where it is heat-sealed, and placed a Ring Pop inside of it so that the package would have to deform around it. We ended up having to smooth it out a bit because it was hard to see the flavors. The simulation was correct though. If you go look at these in the real world, there is a crease at the bottom where the flavors are printed. But since these are product heroes, we bent the rules of physics a bit.😉
